    DF 140 Water in Oil

    OK! Maybe making some headway. I got started late so I didn't do all that I wanted to do. I did go out and purchased a large container and ran the engine with all intakes under water. I started and turned it off right away. Reflex from not seeing that water pressure needle jump up. The pee stream was nowhere as strong as it usually is. Restarted and let run for while; the stream was steady and the pressure was about 5 pounds. I raised to right at 2900 rpm's and it seemed like a limiter feature kicked in. It would not let me go any higher, anyway, at this rpm, the pressure was only round 12 pounds. Previously, the pressure would be over 20 lbs. Tomorrow I will change the oil again and bypass the oil cooler. I will run till warm and check for water in oil, oil coming out of water ports on oil cooler, if a seal is bad in the oil cooler, and take a compression test while it is hot. Hopefully things are looking up!

      In neutral the ecm won't let the engine rev over 3000 and timing fixed at 8 deg.

        Okay! Just got in. Isolated oil filter, changed oil, checked thermostat, and ran for 30 minutes. Never got hot, no oil came out of oil cooler water jacket, and did not get water in oil. I know the final test will be on the water running, but it is looking good. Water pressure up to 8 pounds at 2900 rpm's and now I noticed a considerable amount of water spraying out of the exhaust hole next to the pee hole. I would hardly ever see water come out of there. It is a steady splatter, this would be a better description. Feeling positive!!!!

          Well, my glee was short lived. Took compression test cold, 180 straight down the line, I was all smiles. Warmed it up for 15 minutes at 1500 rpm's ran another compression test 180,165, 150, 150. ***! Now what?

            A leak down test would be my next move.

              Did you disable the ignition system and and open the throttle wide open to do the compression test. Them readings don't seem right do the test again, your best cylinder should have went up when it was warm. Check the bucket clearance on the valves.

                I'm gonna blame the grand kids on this one! Yes, I disabled the ignition system but I did not open up the throttle. I will do it again this afternoon. I'll have my wife keep the kiddo's off the boat! Thanks again!

                    Sorry I took so long to respond. Warmed up the engine and took another compression test. This time I openned up the throttle and all went well. No. 1 had 185 and the rest 180. I will be going fishing this coming weekend to run the engine under load and hopefully find some closure on this problem. Hopefully!!!!

                      Even with the high water pressure in the leg, if head gasket, engine holder, are sealing water would not get into the sump, So I hope for your sake lowering the pressure in the leg stops the water getting into the sump and gives you some trouble free fishing.

                        Yes, I agree with you. The mating surfaces with a gasket should keep any water out regardless of the pressure. After this latest disassembly (partial) and inspecting holder, block, and oil pan, the only thing left would be a cracked head. The compression test was enlightening, but an engine under load can make a little crack open up. Now why it has never got hot, that is a mystery, if the head has a crack. What is puzzling is that there was no water coming in for about 8 months of use! When I intalled the gauge with the new jack plate, my pressure would run no more then 15 -18 pounds. Then on a trip running out, I noticed the pressure jump to over 25 lbs. I just don't remember if that is when my problems began. Well listen, thank you very much for your advice and it has helped tremendously. Let's see what happens this weekend, weather permitting?

                          I have just rebuilt a DF140 and have the same problem of water in the oil.I have just realized that there are two different engine holders for the DF140 and therefore two different engine holder gaskets. serial numbers are 51211-90J10 and 51211-90J21. As it turns out I unknowingly ordered the wrong gasket for my engine holder. I have removed the powerhead and when I looked closely at the engine holder gasket it does not completely cover a tiny hole in the water jacket and allows water to pass directly to the sump (the other engine holder does not have the tiny hole so the gasket I ordered is to suit this holder.) Once I get the correct gasket for my engine (51211-90J21) it will cover the hole and I am sure the problem will be fixed.

                            I have the same problem with a 2005 DF250 its been in the shop since March completely rebuilt twice its had water in the oil 6 times now. The Dealer would have charged me a little over $8000 if they would have fixed it but since they were not able to repair it they only want $4000 to get my motor back with the same problem. They sent the heads and block to s machine shop the second time to test for cracks it came back negative. Then they had a Suzuki rep there while they rebuilt it the second time. It works fine in the test tank then they took it to the lake on Tuesday, WATER IN THE OIL AGAIN. 320 hours on a $17,000 engine

                              Sounds like it is time for a good attorney and a new engine. I just wish we could get better technical support from Suzuki! I just contacted them thru the customer service department. Hope I can get something positive back on this issue?

                                Have just replaced the engine holder gasket on my 2006 DF140 with the correct one (the one thats covers the little hole that allows water into the sump)and have run the motor on the ear muffs."HOORAY ITS ALL FIXED".
                                Seems crazy that Suzuki make two different engine holder plates and two different gaskets for the same year engines.
