My friend has a 250HP 4 stroke and it overheats at idle, it will run all day at any speed except idle, a couple of minutes after you pull it back to idle, it over heats, the local dealer has replaced the water pump, but did not fix the problem, do these motors have some sort of water by pass valve that maybe stuck? the motor does this on the flushers too.

Noel, had this problem with a df140 several times, assuming the same bypass valve is in the bigger motor, at low speed the overheat alarm was activated and the motor shut down. The mechanic that fixed it removed small particles of sand and coral out of a bypass valve that activates at low speed to allow more water through the head. Ask your mate if he has run into a sand bar at speed lately? That forces the sand through the water intake grate above the prop and up to the valve. The good thing is the motor doesn't actually overheat and get damaged but the alerts will be recorded.
Hope this will help.

I will get them to look for the valve, you would think an authorised dealer would know to look there, seeing as the problem only occurs at idle, and the motor DOES get hot, and the code is recorded. But as mentioned, the motor will run all day without any problems, as long as it does not idle for more than a minute.

Some more info. The valve is in the left? side of the leg, remove the cover and it will be held in with two bolts.
How it operates, at idle it is normally closed forcing water into the head, at speed it opens to reduce pressure through the system, you will find it is stuck open causing insufficient cooling water and the resultant overheat at idle.

Thanks for that, I will see him this afternoon and let him know, he does not want to keep throwing money just hoping to fix it, he does not mind paying for the repair, as long as it gets fixed. The boat strangely enough is a US import, (to Australia) he only got it a few weeks ago and it had this problem first trip, pretty good looking boat though.
