  • 40 hp surging

Greetings, I have new 40 hp with about 5 hours on it. I followed all initial break in procedures. Anyway, the other day the motor cruised along nicely at 3600 rpm, but when slowly moving the throttle up to the 4000 range the engine surged with the tach racing toward 5000. When going back to 3600 motor again stayed steady. This happened a couple times. There was no cavitation--water was smooth. I have a fuel water separator that I drained, but I only use non-ethanol gas. Fuel tank is 6 gallon portable and had more than half tank. I was not able to check the small air vent on the tank, if that makes any difference--it was open, but can't say how much. The tank was tilted toward the stern a bit--not sure if that makes any difference. The above may be irrelevant as possible causes of surging, so any advice/suggestions appreciated. Many thanks, Larry

I’d notify your dealer since this should be a warranty job. It will be due for it’s 20 hour service soon and they could look into it then. If you have a hub type prop maybe it slipped, mark a straight line on your prop and hub, next time it surges check your line ensuring the line is aligned with the prop and hub
