What is strange with all this if there was a timing issue, there should be a check engine light with some timing codes. If something happened with the inlet phasers, oil control solenoids it should have brought on the check engine light.

If the engine has compression, spark, fuel air, correct valve timing, there has to be combustion in the cylinder no 2. If it was just one engine when he opened it up it may have broken a valve spring, but two engines same cylinders would not think.
I first thought wrong oil high oil pressure and when the ecu commanded the oil control valve solenoids the high pressure may have damaged the internal return springs inside the oil control valves.
That would have made the phasers have full advance at idle and when the piston is pushing exhaust gas out of the cylinder with the inlet valves opening early would push exhaust gas into the intake manifold.
And because it has standard exhaust timing the exhaust valves don’t close till after TDC when the piston travels down the cylinder it will pull exhaust gas back into the cylinder. When the piston travels back up the cylinder on compression there is too much exhaust gas and combustion does not take place.
