  • forgotten flush plug

Brand new 150s. Side flush plug was left out and boat was launched. Ran three hours at >1000 RPM after three hours went to idle and both engines quit after high temp alarm. Checked and found both side flush plugs missing. Replaced plugs and engines ran normally afterwards. Does the high temperature shut down hurt the engines?

Usually if you hear the high temp alarm and shut it down straight away, it should be OK.

These engines have 2 kinds of temp alarm. One is a high temp alarm when engine reaches a set threshold.

The other is a temp gradient alarm, (temp rise over time) which alarms if the temp rises suddenly over a short period of time but may not have reached the high temp threshold.

Both alarms happen before damage is done, as you would expect. Turn off without delay, allow to cool, and address the issue is the normal response.

thanks moonlighter! The engines ran perfectly for the next 20 hours but I still worried. I have them mounted on the back of a barge that will become a houseboat in the near future. Do you know if there is any significant difference in flushing the motors from the front (top) flush plug or the side (bottom) flush plug? I cannot remove the motors from the water or raise them completely out of the water. I want to flush them the best I can. I was surprised to read that I should not run the engine(s) when I am providing water through the flush ports.

You will be fine simply flushing them via the flush ports, they are designed to get water to where it is important.

Definitely DO NOT run the engines when using the flush ports.

Given your use, pay particular attention to the internal and external engine anodes, check them regularly and replace if required.

        Enjoy your new Zukes!
