Mechanical question df 115 Chain tensioner. Have laughed at one picture of chain tensioner and the question is whether the small spring should be like this? Thanks for the reply.

The function of that little spring is to keep the plunger of the chain tensioner up against the chain, if you look on the plunger there is a row of little teeth and as the plunger moves out of it's housing, the little spring keeps the lever meshing into the teeth on the plunger, that way when the engine shuts off and there is no oil pressure, the plunger won't move back into it's housing, even though there is a main spring inside the plunger letting the chain come loose.
You will know when it is not working, on start up you will hear chain rattle until to oil pressure gets up and forces the plunger against the chain.

Even though there is a heavy spring inside the plunger, when the engine shuts off the engine crank will rotate a small amount in the opposite direction, and if the ratchet did not lock, the tensioner would move back and allow the chain to become loose. You have to make sure that the little spring sits inside the the recess properly when you assemble it. Did you check those primary coil resistances with an other meter.

Hi and thanks for the reply redlowrey. Have not done anything with the electrical on the motor since I am waiting for an oscilloscope. Will be back on the forum when I have assembled the engine. There was a lot of dirt in the cooling system which made the engine hot. Before I disassembled the chain tensioner, I rotated the engine to notice there was a bit slack on the chain in some positions when the camshaft was pressed by the valve springs. Hope it is normal. The small spring was as shown in the picture and it manages to lock the tensioner. I will update on the second thread later when the engine is ready. Thank you so much for the reply redlowrey
