  • Telltale stream

1st time ran this new to me boat. Boat ran good. No alarms. Ran it 20 miles. Some extended idle some 5k for miles. Twin 03 DF140's on a 24' CC.

Cold engine start, SB engine will pee slightly then a steady stream. Port will flow twice as much. I watched it while running in water at anything over idle and they both flow. Even idling in water, decent flow. SB still more for sure. I have pulled the tips and ran a wire up them. They are clean. I have them angled to the 7 oclock position so I can see the stream from the helm.

When I got home to flush, the port did not flow any water out the telltale. Not a drop. Engine was certainly warm. I revved a bit and normal water flow began and continued. No exiting water was hot or anything over luke warm. Port engine pee's like I would think it should all the time. I have decent flush muffs and very good hose water pressure. Even so, the SB just flows much more out the telltale.

any ideas or areas to start checking?

      maintenance records?
when was the water pump serviced last? Impellers need to be replaced at least every two years, regardless of hours used.

      check for internal corrosion ..
you can pull the thermostat and see what condition it is in
the other thing and maybe more importantly, pull the internal anodes.
this also allows you to look for corrosion but these need to be inspected and cleaned on a regular basis
IF it appears to be less than clean, you might consider running the engine using a solution of vinegar and water.
will see if I can locate a link for you.

(from the post as mentioned by Hoosmatroos)

and lastly, if you don't have a copy of the service manual, I would highly suggest buying a copy.

I guess I'm asking what could cause a weaker pee stream on the hose. I know the F yamaha's are very weak on the hose at idle. In the water they are fine. This one does the same thing. If it where not for the SB engine peeing some much more all the time, I would not question it.

Might just start with an impeller.

what kind of records did the previous owner leave you with?
do you have a really.. good .. Suzuki mechanic in your area?
a 14 year old engine probably should have a number of things checked by a good mechanic (hard to find-sometimes)..

It's a 13yr old used boat, this one is on me. I certainly don't know everything but I do most of my work...with help from you fine folks.

is there a difference in the 90j01 and 90j11 impeller? My engines are 374xxx

in looking at the part numbers
the 90J01 looks to be the part number you need
this fits a whole host of engines from the 90's on up

I did not see the 90J11 part number .. doesn't mean it does not exist,, just could not find it..

FYI, It has been noted more than once that you should replace the other parts of the pump as well, i.e. the mating surface parts.

              Good luck..

water out the pee tube is whatever temp the water going in is.
that water has not travel through the power head
many folks have had water problems (out the pee tube) off a garden hose, only to have the problem go away at the river or lake
I know with the 150/175 there is another set of holes in front of the screened part you put the muffs over
if fact my mechanic put two muffs on when he was doing some work
the other option is to place tape over these extra holes
put the muffs on, turn on the water and see where water flows out from

The stream while idling in the water is well above what the hose is.

Ideally an actual temp gauge or psi gauge would tell me if I'm chasing a problem or not.

new impeller/gasket/plate installed. Old one was not showing obvious signs but did it anyways. Same result in the pee stream. It was quicker to start on a cold sitting engine but same general amount coming out.

                        next area to look at?

Art, don't these 4's have a pressure valve? Maybe dirty, possibly a vinegar flush?

                          Good luck.
