  • DF140 fuel in oil - testing?

I know this is a common problem given the number of threads I've turned up about it, but what I'm running into now is I can't find in any of those threads how to actually test to identify the problem. Pretty much "it's the fuel pump or the VST float/seat" but how to determine which? What are the appropriate test(s) to rule out one or the other, or both, and how to perform said tests?

Here is what I've done so far from what I could determine. Unbolted the low pressure fuel pump from the engine, pumped primer, no visible drips/leaks present. Is that sufficient or should I also be "pumping" the plunger while keeping the line pressurized with the primer bulb? Maybe that makes more sense as I think about it.

For the VST/float/seat, I disconnected the small line that attaches to the very top of the engine head (valve cover) and routed that line into an empty plastic bottle. Started the engine running on the water hose and left it running for 5-7 minutes, no trace of fuel coming out of said hose. Should I have raised the engine above idle? Ran longer?

Like I said I feel certain that the most likely explanation is one of the above, just want to be sure I'm performing the appropriate tests. I could order a new low pressure pump and a new valve and needle, but would rather have some level of confidence going in.

    Thanks much!

Ok soon after posting this I pulled the low pressure pump again and worked the plunger while pumping the primer bulb, sure enough got some slow drips of fuel on my hands seeping out from the backside of the pump. Gotta be the culprit.

Had exactly the same issue with my 140 and yes it solved the problem, and it looks like you have checked off most of the other culprits

Did you have any bad running issues or was it just fuel in the oil ?

Never noticed a thing when running, but I’m very particular when changing oil to not overfill, but then noticed when it was time for the oil change that the level was high - maybe 1/4” above the upper mark on the dipstick. And smelled like gas.
