  • DT 65 partial blockage at tell tail

My DT 65 has a partial blockage at the tell tail. EXAMPLE: It has a good flow of water, then the flow turns into a dribble. A piece of heavy line pushed up the tell tail will result in a good flow, for awhile. This is disconcerting when a number of miles from base. If this happens whilst running engine in tank, a blow with compressed air results in a full flow. If think it is a lump of salt causing the problem.
Any ideas how to cure without a strip down.?

If you have a drum to run motor in, put some anti corrosion flush in the drum, or add vinegar to drum. Depending on size of drum, add enough flush, or vinegar to do some good. Run motor in same solution for about 1-2 hours, if solution gets too hot, break up the time in stages, letting solution cool down before running again. Run the motor enough time to break down the corrosion blocking the tell-tale hole.

Good luck, post back when able to let us know how it's going.

      Thanks Solar man
One gallon of vinegar in approx 15 gals of water, sufficient to cover the plate. Start
up provided a dribble of water, added the vinegar and almost instantaneous reaction. Never had such a good flow through tell tail. Continued to run for 3 half hour periods, flow perfect.
      Again THANK YOU.

Glad we could help, i probably would have suggested 2-3 gallons vinegar for 15 gal drum, but as long as it worked.

Always put enough water in the drum to be several inches above where the l lower section (foot) bolts together, because the impeller is usually above that bolted seam, and always submerge the impeller before attempting to start.

Should not need to flush with vinegar but every few years, but always flush with fresh water after.

        Happy boating.
