  • Algae weeds on lower leg

Unfortunately the setup on our boat means part of the lower leg/gearbox casing is still in the water when the leg is tilted up. This means we get algae weeds growing quite quickly on the leg.

I can scrub it off with an abrasive cleaning cloth with difficulty. Can anyone suggest some sort of protective coating we could put on to stop or reduce this please?

    Many thanks.

I would suggest spraying the area with liquid Lanolin grease each time the boat is left docked - after each use.

It is environmentally friendly (natural product extracted feom wool) and discourages weed and critters from growing/attaching.

In some areas it is used as an anti-fouling agent so it should do the job. Its also a very good anti-corrosion and water dispersant treatment - I spray my outboard engine under the cowl with it once a year, keeps the salt etc off.

There are several brands available, this is just one example:

LANOTEC Liquid Lanolin Heavy Duty Penetrant Lubricant 750gm Spray

Thanks but lower leg would be under water so could not spray.

Then instead of the spray, get a tub of lanolin grease and smear it on.
