  • DF140 Oil Leak

Started DF 140 4 stroke in driveway and forgot to turn on water. Ran motor for about 5 seconds then realized water was not on and shut motor off. Turned water on to get flush going then started motor. Ran well for about 5 minutes, then noticed oil spewing out lower half of motor kowling. Any idea of extent of damage to engine?

5 seconds without water shouldnt have done much damage. Engine wouldnt get hot enough that quickly.

May have glazed up/melted the tips of the water pump impeller though....

Its possible or even likely that the oil leaking is unrelated to this event. Engine Oil leaking from anywhere under the cowl will run down the leg.

I assume it is engine oil and not gear oil?? They smell quite different.

Have you taken the engine cowl off and had a look around for oil leaks? And checked the dipstick - to see what the engine oil looks like and the level? And??

Check around the oil filter. Wouldnt be the first time a filter has split, filter seal failed, or filter case developed a tiny pinhole. If you can see where oil has leaked out but cant find the source you could put the muffs on again, gtebthe water connected, start the motor with cowl off and look for oil spurting out. Make sure oil level is OK though first!

        Oil loss

Had the same problem with my DF140 . . .it was the oil cooler. The internal gaskets corroded and allowed oil to seep out into the water (exhaust). Replaced oil cooler ($130) and had no problems. I did take the old oil cooler apart and confirmed that the O-rings were actually bad.

'''''' You would have had oil mixing with water from the prop, he says there is oil running down the lower part of the motor, it could be coming from somewhere else.

Quote"Ran well for about 5 minutes, then noticed oil spewing out lower half of motor kowling";....... Might be as simple as a looses oil filter with oil running down what i assume he means Cowling ?
