  • Propeller strick an object

My 225hp Suzuki outboard had its propeller struck an object. My repair yard said that I need to change the whole lower unit and a a gear in the powerhead. I would like to have opinion of any body having a similar incident. Whats parts of the lower which are likely to get damage during a propeller struck an object.

Are you running a stainless steel prop?

Yes, it is a stainless steel prop

SS doesn't give like aluminum thus the damage transfers to the LU and other components. A new LU and replacing a gear in the powerhead seems a bit extreme though. If the components being recommended for replacement were worn out already then perhaps so.

Couple of years ago hit the top of a sunken piling, just a glancing touch
Was not going fast at the time but....
Pushed in one of the blades on the stainless prop - not repairable
Put a slight bend in the part of the drive shaft the the prop is attached to
So that part and a couple of seals were replaced

I suspect the damage directly relates to how fast and how much impact you had with the object
If in doubt, just ask to have the mechanic show and explain the damage he is seeing when he pulled it apart
If he has not pulled it apart, my feeling is he is just guessing

I've repaired lots of lower units that hit a log, rock or something else. Most of the time the gears in the lower neads to be replaced. Never, never had to replace "a gear" in the powerhead. If the drive shaft is intact then the receiver gear should be intact too.

Although the gears and bearings in the lower unit are expensive, the repair itself is straight forward.....

Thank you all for you advice. There was only a small dent in one blade of the prop, very slight bent in the prop shaft. The prop shaft housing casing was crack allowing water in the gear oil. No metal particles in oil.

Ai, if the housing broke then best is to replace the complete lower. You can find one and maybe replace some of the parts with your old one. Good luck and let us know what you do.
