  • DT75 Top Engine removal question

    Hello - I'm trying to remove the top engine from my DT75 Outboard. I have removed the eight 4" engine set bolts and the nut from under the rear cowling, and I have disconnected the clutch. I did all this while the unit was in neutral. I have an engine hoist connected to the motor but am unable to lift if off the lower unit assembly. I have done NOTHING to the lower unit at this time. I believe the engine is still connected to the drive shaft. I can lift it about 1" off the base but it will not slide up and off. Again I think it's b/c maybe the drive shaft is still connected? Do I need to tilt the motor up and pull out the drive shaft or can this be done without any lower unit disassembly? Happy to provide pics if that helps. Thanks!

    Ok, using the correct terminology, I was actually asking about the powerhead removal. I had a friend help and with the right muscle, and angling of the power head for removal we were able to lift it up with a cherry picker. Just wanted to update my post in case anyone else needed assistance. For the record, this did NOT require removing the lower unit.

      I guess it could be possible to have the drive shaft splines stuck to the crank on the power head. I know the shift rod is susceptible to that on the lower unit. However, it is more exposed to elements. Are you certain you're lifting the power head straight up? I know they tend to lean in toward the boat. Also, did you look at the manual for all bolts? Even if you don't have a manual you can look at the various components of the engine parts (schematics) on the link at the top of this website. There is not a hidden bolt underneath the valve cover is there?
      Also, knowing what year model would help others look at some of these diagrams.

        FYI, you will need to be just as careful with the straight up and down angle of the power head when replacing it. Also, I would use a bead of gasket sealer on both sides of the gasket. A small bead, but on both sides.
