  • Anyone "played" with diagnosis plug in a Suzuki EFI engine?

    Hi there!
I have a Johnson J70PL4SN engine (allegedly clone to Suzuki DF70), with the round diagnosis plug.
I would like to play with it, be able to get DTCs in the future if needed, and maybe also read some engine parameters.

I have several OBD boxes for automotive, starting from the basic ELM327, Delphi VCS, etc

Something I've read, that hopefullu someone can confirm (or deny) is that the marine OBD (so called OBDM) is exactly the same protocol with just a different plug and it might be used with just a regular cheap ELM327 read with the correct plug wiring. Anyone?

Any hint from your own experience on this would be appreciated!!
    Thanks in advance

You can play around with that, or you can just cut to the chase and buy the Suzuki Diagnostic software and associated cables to run on your laptop. Search ebay and search ghis site you will see posts about it . SDS software is what its called. Suzuki Diagnostic System.

Its designed for Suzuki’s and I imagine it will work with a Johnzuki too. Perhaps someone else can confirm that.

Yes, I've seen those, but they are not cheap (at least for me, for a private use and only for fun), at least compared to those ELM327 car OBD readers that run as low as $10 each, so the question is if they could be rewired to the round plug to use SDS software in them.

Also my engine "is suzuki inside" but the electroncs may be Johnson, so would SDS still work on other makers in case the ECU is not Suzuki?

The ecu is Suzuki. Only the paint and name sticker is Johnson.

I will leave it for others to comment further.

Only works with Suzuki Multifunction Gauge which is no help to you. Have you approached a Suzuki automotive dealer for their insight? Maybe their automotive scanners will work with their marine engines? I’m guessing you’ll run into proprietary software issues.

Ok, no, this is probably something that won't work out taking the official route. Im just trying to "hack" into the diagnosis port and see if I can t valuable information I can use for myself, they are not going to provide this information. Seems like this is going to be a hard project... Just read somewhere else that this protocol has NOTHING to do with automotive OBD protocols and there's no way a normal car code reader with an specific round plug adapter is going to work.

            Thanks everyone!

That's pretty interesting if you want to hook a computer to it, but in my case I want to use a custom made electronic box that monitors the boat to be able to connect to the engine and read parameters from it, and that's why I was asking for some "·hack level" information if possible, but I don't think it's going to be easy....

                Thanks
