  • Suzuki 2002 140hp oil leak w/pics

Hello all- so my 2002 Suzuki 140hp (626 hrs) has a slight oil leak i noticed when i tilt motor up (prop out of water)- I have located the source in the photos here- I changed the infamous plug that potentially causes corrosion (mine was not corroded upon purchase- whew!)-

Notice the white cracked plastic part- what is that part called?
    140 zoom.jpg
i will put photo zoomed out in next post since i can't do 2 here

I am a new boat owner and live in a small town, tiny island of Sitka, Alaska-cannot send to dealer here
The Motor runs FINE- I maintain it very well, flush, lube, change anodes, etc...

Possible cause- old mechanic who changed water impeller last summer MIGHT have installed lower unit back on and cracked this plastic part? not too sure- but it kinda started leaking shortly after that job......

New mechanic says we can JB weld the area to get me through summer then do the major job of taking motor apart on hoist and digging deeper to fix/change that plastic 'bearing'?? gasket? no Suzuki dealer on the island ANY help greatly appreciated-
    cheers!

Joe that looks like part of the shifter bushing. It's hard to tell from the pics. Look on boats.net at the parts schematics and see what it is. Brownspoint.com has schematics that are a little clearer.

Sitkajoe, have a good look around the oil filter and cooler area, these oil coolers are prone to salt build up and in my opinion they should be pulled apart and cleaned on a regular basis. Check to see if the filter has come loose , There are two of those white bushes and are easily replaced, I cut a small piece of plastic tube as a temporary fix till the new ones arrived

          I had same issue

I have a DF140, 07, that had the same problem.
Look up the following in history, "Search":

          My 07 DF140 oil leak I can't see

                UPDATE on oil leak

SO- checked oil cooler, no leak there at all- it's weeping from the cracked bushing near bolts only like in the pics i provided - every time I add oil that's only spot it leaks from-
Mechanic says "clutch shift seal" and that cracked bushing will be checked out and replaced, if that is indeed where leak is-

We will see when we take this darn motor apart, which it sounds like we have to do- it is going on the hoist when these parts from brown's point marine
                come later this week-

I'm of course 'apprehensive about taking the motor apart to hoist it, but mechanic has done it often and assures me it is not something to worry about-

I have a question i wanna put out here- COULD I somehow patch up the leak at the cracked bushing for the month so i can take the boat out?? might sound silly- but it is my only time i can take boat out- otherwise going to do the long repair job of hoisting the motor off its block-

thank you all for chiming in- never had to deal with this before as i am a new boat owner-

any advice, assurance, or similar experiences here????

                sincerely,
                Joe
