  • 1989 Suzuki DT85 idling high

I'm hoping someone can help me with a issue that has just started with my Suzuki DT85 outboard. The problem that I'm experiencing is high rpm's when at idle (approx. 3000 rpms). Here's what happens. When I start the motor cold, it starts up fine and comes up to about 1500 rpm's during the initial warm up. After a minute or so, the rpm's will lower to 800-1000 rpm's (which is the norm). Now, after about 2-4 minutes of idle run time, the idle rpm's will slowly climb topping out at around 3000 rpms. At this point I will shut the motor down because of the high rpms and water flush not being able to keep up. If I try to start the motor immediately after shutting it down, it returns to the high rpms right away. If I wait 2-4 hours and the engine cools down, the start up sequence that I first explained will occur. My attempts to fix have included removing and cleaning all three carbs (did not rebuild because rebuilt last year). I also tried to adjust the idle using the ignition timing switch but there were no changes to the problem. I'm hoping someone can offer some advice on other potential causes or ways to troubleshoot this problem. Thanks.

Possibly your temp sensor is acting up when it reaches a warmer temp. Test the resistance when cold, then check again after it starts the higher rpms. Although if the sensor, it should go to 1500 rpms not higher to 3k?
Please explain what you mean by the, "water flush not being able to keep up"?

It could be your throttle position sensor (TPS) acting up as the motor warms up? If you have a suzuki manual for your motor, it should tell you how to test the TPS, but i believe it requires a jumper wire?

Good luck, post back when able to let us know what you find out.
