  • 1987 DT8 no start fiasco

Im at my wits end with this thing. ASE master mechanic(retired) and im stumped.
So, motor had been sitting for 10 years. Cleaned carb, fired and ran on second pull. Replaced impeller(was plastic due to age), wouldnt start. Found no spark condition. checked all resistances, found coil secondary to be low (1400). Ordered and installed new coil, now have very good spark. Motor still wont run. Compression good, mechanical timing good. No clue. So i check resistance values again. Secondary coil resistance is WAY too high now according to spec. Spec is 2700-4100, reading 14k.
Am i missing something? or did I just get a bad coil of of the box? I nice old honda 4 stroke with electric start is looking good right about now, and i hate honda.

I might put the old coil back in place, just to see if it reads good now?
Not sure what could cause the new coil to read 14k ohms, unless the windings shorted? Not sure how that could happen, maybe rectifier/regulator not working properly? Or a wire is shorted somewhere?

Good luck, post back on what you find out.

old coil secondary is 1500 ohms, which according to my chart is too low, that coil doesnt give any spark. white/red wire(pulsar coil) to ground is 92 ohm. black red wire(charge coil) to ground is 297 ohm. I might try another set of new spark plugs first. But maybe this new coil is bad. Wish i could get a spark hand turning the motor to check spark timing.

checked the timing by hand. spark is 65 degrees advanced. guess I got the wrong CDI part number
