How to put Gear shaft back in leg

Pulled gear change shaft out of leg suzuki df 40 now cannot get back in. can this be done without disassemblimg rest leg ? .

The gear shifter shaft that goes into lower unit? I don't know how that came out without removing lower unit. Pull the prop to make it easier and then unbolt the lower unit to reinstall. I'm sure there are tons of You Tube videos. Dangar Marine from Australia, has numerous vids that show him working on smaller Suzuki's. I know he has one on pulling and re-installing lower unit.
