Suzuki SMIS 2 Engine 2 Tank not working

Hello,

I recently repowered my twin DF250s from '07 to '16. I have SMIS 400 gauges. My boat has two tanks, one connected to each engine.

Before I repowered, my gauges were configured with 2 tank setup, and they showed the level of each tank, and when I filled up, I can calibrate each engine separately.

After I repowered, I updated the firmware to Engine interface 3.5, gauge software 2.6.

All the gauges were reset, and I reran boat setup.

I chose two engine, two tank set up, it only asks me for the vessel fuel capacity, not individual fuel tank sizes. The fuel management pages also only show 1 fuel bar for the vessel.

I read every thread I can find on this issue. Do the new software not support this properly anymore?

Any help in getting this setup correctly would be appreciated!

There have been several reports that I have seen that indicate the old SMIS digital displays do not work well with 2016 MY engines. Even when they are updated to the latest software.

I did see one post on THT when the operator replaced their interface cables with new V3.5.0 cables and it all then worked - this suggests there MAY be a newer build of V3.5.0 that may work better with the new engines. POSSIBLE, but I am not sure.

You could try going to this link, doing the download/ etc, go into the program tree and find the software update file, copy to a SD card and then upload it to your existing cables and see if that works. Thats what I did some time ago and then posted the direct link to V3.5.0 in the resource section on this forum. But, as I say, it is possible there is a more recent build of V3.5.0 - if there is, it will be at this link:

An aternative is to ditch the SmIS displays and get C-10's. I know the earlier poster had some issues with set up, but I do believe that they can be set to individual tanks and will then work reliably with your 2016 motors.

If you want to check this out further, one of the most knowledgeable people in the US is Mike at International Marine. Give him a call, he will be able to advise re the C-10's setup with confidence.

I do have the new engine interface cables. I had to get them because the plugs on the new engines were compatible with the old cables.

They are v3.5

I will try flashing the gauges ( 1 of which is new too ) again and see if that helps.

The network setup - setting the number of engines, tanks and their capacities - is done via the gauges but is actually a function of the interface software. So, flashing the gauges again is very unlikely to make any difference.

The normal procedure is to set the network up as follows:

First - as 2 engines/2tanks
Then name each engine as starboard and port
Then set tank capacities to each engine.

What other displays are attached to your network? Any Simrad or Lowrance displays? The setup can be done thru them much more easily than via the SMIS displays.

You MUST HAVE BOTH ENGINE KEYS TURNED ON when youare doing the initial setup, or it wont work. Advisable to:

1 turn both keys to "on" where they beep and the SmIS gauges come alive.
2. Go into SMIS or Simrad menu, find the network menu, device list, and see what devices are listed there. You should see 2 x Suzuki devices listed. If you dont see 2 of them, you have a problem, because 1 or more of them are not communicating with the network. Check connections.
3. If both Suzukis are visible on the network device list, proceed to doing the configuration.

I will try it again. I was pretty sure both engine keys are on. I will unset the engines, then rerun boat set up.


I have a lowrance HD gen 3 display hooked up right now to do all the flashing. How do i do the setup through the lowrance HD?

I've only found how to flash the software.

First, turn both engine keys on.

Then, In the HDS, in the menu, find the network menu. Then select device list. Then select one of the Suzuki devices. Open, select configure. You will then see drop down menus where you can select boat setup (number of engines and tanks etc, fuel setup etc.

Do not try to set engine hp or year, they are auto selected and cant be changed. They are set at engine family level so dont worry if they dont look quite right.

I just tried that. In the configure menu, you can set number of engines, number of tanks and... 'VESSEL TOTAL FUEL', no matter how many engines you pick.

It seemed that Suzuki changed the way this works with their newer engine interface software that you only have total fuel. That maybe why to calibrate fuel flow requires you to run one engine at a time for a few gallons.

This is really ridiculous.

My SMIS gauges V2.7 work not correctly with my 2016 DF300AP engine interface 3.5.
Main problem is that i get a lot of ghost error messages popping up,
but i could configure the SMIS gauges a 2 engine 2 tanks.

I think (i have to search in hundreds of emails) i got a newer version mailed by the dealership and this supposed to fix that problems,
bus as i don't have a NAVICO device i can't flash the SMIS gauges so i never tried that.

After hours and hours tinkering with that i got a good price for 4 C10 gauges and i solved the problem.

So you said that the C10 gauges with 3.5 software with 2016 motors gives you 2 engines each with its own tank?!

Ugh, OK.

Do you have the software that they sent you? can you maybe email it or dropbox it so i can try it out?
