  • New DF 150SS

At 5 hours during initial break in period I started the outboard and it smoked so bad you could hardly see the motor. I called dealer and he said it to worry because of the 6 year warranty and that his smokes from time to time. I told him I was worried about it since it was a 4 stroke and I paid a lot of hard earned money for it.
I had the dealer service it at 20 hours. Now the 100 hour light came on and in that time period the oil level has dropped 1" on the dipstick since the 20 hour service. The motor will still put out some blue smoke but not every time I start it. The dealer said to run it at 5,800rpm for 15-20 minutes at a time to seat the rings. I tried that but it will still smoke periodically. Should I contact Suzuki or will they just tell me to talk to the dealer?
The dealer also told me the 150SS is really a 175hp. Thanks

When the boat is on the trailer, what position is the motor in when stored? It should be put down, to same position it would be in when running, ideally.

If its kept tilted up, then you will get more if that smoke when starting.

Mine smoked a bit for the first 100hrs.

When I get home with the boat I always put the motor down. It seems it never smokes when I put the boat in the water . Only later while I'm fishing.
Yours quit smoking after 100 hours? Hopefully mine will too. I talked to the marina yesterday and they have contacted Suzuki and waiting on a reply from one of their engineers. They may want to do a leak test.
      Thank you for your reply.

So when does the blue smoke comes? When the engine is cold or when hot?

One of my daily use DF300AP does the same thing.
Some days (once every 2 weeks) when starting he sends for a few seconds a bluish cloud out, not very dense but easy to notice.
Mechanic said that a bit of oil is passing thru a open valve when stored in tilted position.
When the smoke comes when cold starting then it can't be the rings,
if the smoke starts when the engine is hot then it can be the rings.

Wrong, but a point of view! AFAIK: The 175 is a 150 with VVT variable valve timing like the 200 and the 225hp
So he says that the 150 is a depowered 175 while i say that the 175 is a pimped 150.
Same question like the hen or the egg, but it's a good selling argument!

The dealer told me the SS 150 was actually 175hp. I don't have a clue. I do know it is still smoking. I took it back and they did a leak test which didn't show a problem so I continue to use it and every few times I start it watch the blue smoke come out of it. It never smokes when I first put it in the water or after running it on plane to my fishing spot but if I idle across the lake, shut it off, fish for awhile and then start it chances are it will then puff out some blue smoke. Again, dealer says he will stand behind the motor but it is a thorn in my side. I would sell the boat and motor if I could but what do I tell buyer? Oh yeah, "the motor only has 150 hours on it but smokes about every 4-5 times you start it". I spent a lot of money for this headache.
