I have a 2003 Johnson DF140 four stroke and I took the motor to a Suzuki dealer because I am hearing a ticking sound in the motor. The Suzuki dealer told me the Johnson is not the same motor as the Suzuki and they do not have the computer software or parts for the Johnson. I thought that they were the same motors with different colors and decals....is that not true? Do I need to find a Johnson repair shop? Thank you in advance.....

Whew, that's a tough question. I know there loads of parts that can interchange between 02 and 2012. In fact, the complete lower unit is interchangeable. I've done it. As for the computer communication? I think you should be asking this forum, what could be making a ticking noise inside the engine. For that, the first thing that comes to mind is the tappet shims. With the cover off the engine, use a screw driver and hold the plastic end to your ear and see where the sound is coming from. Under the valve cover could be, described above.
