  • exhaust in water system

I have a 2003 DT225 that I just recently bought with a 22 foot Grady White. The former owner could not satisfactorily tell me when the last time the water pump was serviced, so I decided to remove the lower unit and check it out even though no problem was currently in play. I replaced the plate, gasket and impeller, put it all back together and fired it up but no flow through the telltale, so I shut it down and got a piece of stiff monofilament and pushed it up into the telltale portal. I fired it up again and still no flow, so I shut it down again and hooked up a hose to the flush port and the water flowed out of the telltale. I fired it up again and thought I could see some vapor or smoke coming out of the telltale, so I shut it down again and disconnected a water hose to the port side head and fired it back up and immediately saw exhaust fumes from the hose. I can't remember ever seeing that, so now I am faced with removing the lower unit and probably having to replace the new impeller. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks

Two things come to mind.. water flow from the hose.. sometime not sufficent

2nd thing.. last year my mechanic showed me that these engines. using the stand muff's don't both sets of holes in the lower drive
in front of the screened water ports to the pump.. there are a couple of other holes that need to be covered..
the mechanic covered them with a 2nd hose and muffs

give that a try and post back results before pulling it all apart

I attached a hose to the flushing port and the water flowed just fine. That told me something was wrong inside, so I removed the lower unit again and removed the housing for the Impeller and quickly noticed that there was no key in the shaft. With two of us hovering over this project, we did not notice that when I pushed the impeller down onto the plate, that the key squeezed out and probably fell in to one of the cavities and later fell out while the unit was being carried back to boat. Fortunately, I had saved the old key and held it in place with a knife blade while pushing the impeller back down.

The impeller was not damaged since it really didn't do anything and now it pees like a race horse.

Problem solved so thanks for your responses. Now off to do some fishing.
