  • 2006 DF70 200 hr tune up. Is it necessary to complete all the recommended items?

    Hi Fellow Forum Members,

My new to me Suzuki outboard is getting readied, for me to tackle the 200 hr tune up.Total time on motor 220 hrs. Suzuki recommends, but I really don't want to comply with all of Suzuki's recommended 200 hr/4 yr procedures. Can I safely aviod the following procedures:
    A) valve clearance adjustment/checks
    B) Timing belt replacement at the 4 yrs the (actually it's at 11 year mark)
    C) Ignition timing

Am I making a mistake by ignoring Suzuki's recommendation to complete the above procedures at the 200 hr/ 11 years? Motor is currently running great.

I don't want to destroy my motor, if I ignore the above manufacturer recommendations.

    Thanks!

A : NO, it is vital to check valve clearances after 200hrs. This is a must do. If you don't want to risk destroying your motor.

Some will say "I didn't do it and nothing happened" but ignore them. Dealers here who didn't do this check/adjustment at 200hrs and when the motor later had related major failures, had to fix it at their costs with no help from Suzuki's warranty program.

Special tools and shims may be required so unless you want to buy or fabricate them, it's a job for a Suzuki dealer. I watched mine do this on my DF115 and it only took 30 minutes or so extra as part of a normal service.

B: edit: I belatedly saw that this is an early DF 70 that had a timing belt, rather than a chain like all the later models. At 11 years old, big risks on not changing it!!!

C: not sure but I thought timing is set by the electronics, but maybe someone else can confirm.

'''Mate are you for real, lucky for you the tappets are adjustable and the timing belt is easy to change.

Despite being lazy and cheap, I will make sure that I complete the above required items.

I greatly appreciate your wisdom. Thank you both.
