  • Programing SMIS gauges?

    Hi and thanks for reading!

So, i took off 4 smis gauges from my dualstation digital trottle DF300AP rig and installed the C10 gauges. All fine so far!
I bought the engine interface to connect my 2011 DF200 non digital and analog tach with 4 alarm lights equipped dive panga outboard to one of the SMIS gauges.
I connected the 2 plugs under the dash (one 4 pin going to the tach and one 2 pin going to the control) to the enbine interface and installed a 3 Tee nmea2000 bus with a termiantor on each end.
Switching on the key the gauge powers up, but start immediately to trow about 12 error codes, including "second station control box error", Trottle control communcation error" and similar codes.
Si it seems to me that the SMIS gauge have the previous setup stored inside and i need to delete this.
I already uninstalled the engine and did a new system setup to change from twin setup to single setup.

I guess that i need to either upload a other software version or enter the gauge memory to change this parameters.

I downloaded the Lowrance HDS Emulator and bought the Lowrance CAN to USB adapter and installed it, but tere is only one red led blinking on the interface but no connection to the NMEA2000 network.
As i have for this purposes a Surface Pro Tablet running Windows 10 (SDS 8.0 is working) i fear the the HDS Emulator don't work because of Windows 10.
I tried also to tun the HDS Emulator in Vindows Vista or Windows 7 Compatibility mode or *****istrator mode, but without success.

    So my questions are:
1° Does someone knows why the SMIS GAuge trows errors and have the old setup stored.
2° How can i gain access to the SMSI settings for dual engine dual control digital engine, and change them to single engine analog control?
3° Is there any way to run HDS Emulator under Windows 10?

    Thanks so much!

    Hi Chris

Firstly, the gauges don't store the old boats dual engine setup. This is stored in the network. You just use the gauges, like a keyboard, to set the network arrangement. This involves doing the initial setup where you set the engine position, number of engines and fuel tanks and set tank capacities.

I believe your problem will be an incompatibility between the engine interface software on the 2011 DF200 with the SMIS gauges software.

For a 2012 year motor, Interface sw version 2.9.0 is recommended. And with that version, SMIS 4" gauge sw version 2.6.0 is recommended.

You can download both these from the link in my sticky thread at the top section of this forum.

However, if you read the first post on that thread you will see that the new interface cables have their sw versions locked. So depending on which interface cable you have attached to the DF200 you might need to exchange the cable with your supplier for the one with V2.9.0 loaded.

Once you have the correct sw versions on both the gauges and the interface, you will be ok, just need to do the initial configuration via the SMIS again and you should be right to go.

Unfortunately, I don't think the HDS emulator will run with Win 10. You may be best trying to get a loan of a HDS that you can temporarily attach to the network and use it to update the sw on both the interface and SMIS. Or, take the SMIS to your Suzuki dealer and they can change the sw for you. Or, buy an old laptop running Win7!

      HI Moonlighter,
      thanks for your answer!
all 3 engine interfaces (2 on big boat, 1 on dive panga) are all 3.5.0
SMIS Software on all 4 gauges is 2.7.1 Boot 1-1.70 Build MZ1561

I bought a new engine interface (the third one) for this boat,
the other engine interfaces are still on the other boat with the new C10 gauges.
As it is my work dive boat there is nothing else on the bus as the engine interface and the SMIS gauge.

I did several times the network setup including:
unmount (or what's called) the engines from the engine interface and then doing the the initial setup where you set the engine position, number of engines and fuel tanks and set tank capacities.

I fear that the problem will be that i have SMIS software for 2013+ but my engine is 2011, so i have to downgrade the SMIS software.
Engine Interface is Software 3.5 and will probably not work either ...

      Dang!

So i have to find a Windows XP/Vista/Seven Laptop or a Lowrance unit to see if i can downgrade the SMIS software from 2.7.1 to 2.6.0.
But to change the Engine Interface is a PITA as i am in Costa Rica and the dealer in Miami.
Well i try to swap it with the local Suzuki dealer here.

      Thanks so much!

Yes, in short, your interface cable has V 3.5.0 and that won't work with a 2011 engine. You need V 2.9.0.

        And the SMIS needs V2.6.0.

Another choice re uploading software is to buy say a Simrad GO7xse with Totalscan transducer, and add it to your boat and network. Might end up a better option than the HDS emulator/cables/laptop arrangement.

You can do all the sw updates to any Suzuki device on the network, and configure the networks using the GO7 (easier than using the SMIS displays) and then you have a backup sounder/GPS on the boat. Also gives you GPS speed so you will then get mpg data as well.

Ive got the GO7xse on my boat, very easy to use and a nice bit of gear.

          Hi Moonlighter,
i wanted once a GO7 as second station unit and to solve this problems.
As i have everything from GARMIN i bought another Garmin unit,
so there is no space anymore to get a GO7 except to use it as separate gps map unit and to program this damned system.
But in this case i need to buy another map what add's another +/- 100-200$ to the bill.

As i already bought the CAN 2 USM interface i guess i will try two things:
1° install a virtual Windows7 machine and test if the emulator run from this VM
2° find a shitty, old laptop just to program the system
3° if it won't work the just drop the idea and keep the analog tach...

          BTW:
Do you know if the C10 gauge can program the network thru the built-in USB bus?

Yes, I believe the C10 can upload to the network. It has a USB port so a card can be connected.
