I've been chasing an overheat issue for about a year. Finally, determined that cooling ports in the head had corrosion preventing circulation and a new head will be necessary. My question is; they're telling me a new head costs 2500. and using my valves, cams etc., it will cost 3900. to fix it. This a 2004, DF 50 with only 300 hours on it. The amount sounds ridiculously high to me. Seems I might be better off to buy a new motor. What would you do?

How much is a new one?
May be best to get a new one a part out the old one? And may be best to get a second quote on parts and repair too. If you go to the Purchase Suzuki parts section on this forum (at the top) you can get a cylinder head for $1650 or thereabouts. So it seems you are being quoted a premium price for the parts.
Your call.
Also, were the internal anodes routinely checked and replaced on the current motor? They are intended to protect against that kind of corrosion. It would be something to stay on top of on a new motor.

I was recently faced with a similar situation, whether to repair or replace a corroded DF50 powerunit with ~300 hours. As new engine is probably >$6k, I decided to try a repair. I found a good used head for $200. See my post, my shortblock has to be replaced too due to a corrosion/crack. I found a used shortblock for $300. I'll probably end up spending $300 on misc. parts, so my repair total cost will be $800. I'm providing all the labor, and I will obviously have no warranty. It's a tough call. If you have time and like repairing things, you could give that a try. If not in a hurry, you may be able to find a nice deal on a decent used engine for a little more. If you are after reliability, a new engine may be best.
