I have a DF 140A 2013 model with only 50 hours on the clock. Under normal running conditions it behaves/runs exceptionally well, no problems. However, if I decide to do some skiing or other water activities off the back of the boat and put the engine under pressure, when I stop and restart the motor a small puff of smoke appears on starting. Should I be concerned?

DF 140A Producing Smoke

Depends on how much smoke and what color..
Normally, no, no smoke from a 4 stroke but..
At 50hrs, not quite broken in so some oil burn (very very little) is OK.
These motors start rich so a puff of semi black smoke not out of the question.
Any 4 stroke should not be tilted 'down' or in when off, always a little up. Just a hair out from perfectly vertical is fine. When tilted any amount of 'in' your cylinders lean down from the crank. Oil drips off everything when shut down, some of this oil will drip onto the bottom of the cylinders and if tilted in, will pool up behind the pistons. Some of this oil will seep past the rings and settle in the combustion chamber. Enough to smoke quite heavily on startup if it sat fully trimmed in for a couple of days.

I wouldn't be concerned. New motor, still bedding in. Mine did much the same thing when it had less than 100 hrs. Small puff.
Just keep an eye on the oil levels, and mention it to your dealer if oil level drops noticeably.
The other thing is, these motors use such a negligible amount of fuel when idling, and are so quiet, that you might as well leave it running during a ski session.
