08 DF115 Question about J1939

I just got a Garmin 942XS Plus that has a J1939 port on the back. Does my interface cable need to plug into the Garmin, or does it stay plugged into the NMEA 2000 network backbone?

Into the backbone. The Garmin would also be plugged into the backbone, and also the power cable.
