  • How to bring back this old 40?

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and I joined because I have an old 40 hp suzuki that I want to bring back to life.

Here is some background about this engine. My dad bought it back in the early to mid 1990's used. Of course he can't remember the year of the motor!!! He barely used it and then it was stolen. around a year later it was recovered from the thieves (they were hiding it in the attic, scared to bring it out). I say why in the heck did you take it then. Right? Anyway, they rubbed off the serial numbers from the nameplate on the mounting bracket. My dad then gave it to my grandpa who barely used it and then my grandpa gave it to my uncle. It was running when he gave it to my uncle but it sat outside in the weather for three years. Then last week, they gave it to me.

I will have to post a pic or two of it but I think it might be a 1993 model. I CANNOT find any information on the internet about this motor. I found one blurry pic of one, and thats about it. It is not seized up, I believe it will start up good but It has some issues that I want to take care of before I start it.

I know I will have to change the impeller and clean the carburetor for sure. But it has a cracked cowling and some parts on the transom mount that are rusted really bad. And I see a hole where something used to be in the front (I think it was the choke, maybe). What ever it was someone down the line replaced it with a string. SOOO, I need information on finding parts and figuring out whats missing.

I am going to post some pics this weekend.

    Crazy Right!!
