  • 9.9 runs BAD

    I got a 2003 9.9 that came on a raft. It must have gone under water before I got it. It would not start, so I pulled the carb and all the jets and lil vents were plugged with corrosion, looked like dry salt. I blew them out, drilled them out, and used carb cleaner to clean the carb the best I could. It would start, but not run at over like 1/4 throttle, just bog,dog, and sound BAD. I put in new plugs, no change. It will run on either cylinder,just not good, so the spark is getting to each cylinder. I thought the carb must be beyond saving , so I bought a new carb. Installed it and fired it up. It runs exactly the same as it did. ALSO, the water coming out the tattletail hose is like HOT even at idle. A full stream, but HOT. I ordered a service manual, to check valve settings and all. Should get back to workin on it next month. Thoughts ?

    if it had been under water, especially salt water as you think, may have done bad thing to the wiring
    I would suggest taking all wiring connection apart and clean each one
    there should be wiring under the flywheel as well

    the hot water problem is more than likely from a bad water pump
    make sure you order all the parts for the pump not just the impeller

    you didn't mention if the is a DT or DF model
    I would guess DT with mention of a carb
    the manual should be a big help

      Arr, Thanks for the input. I will pull apart the wires and put dielectric grease on em. Yea UNDER the fly wheel could be where the problem is. I'm sure the guy I got it from would have never looked under there.

        Essentially you need three things for an engine to run. Fuel/air, spark, compression. I think you have ruled out the former as you have now put a new carb on the engine. You have a spark because the engine will run. The engine uses a waste spark system where both cylinders spark at the same time off the same pulse (top of the compression stroke and top of the exhaust stroke). Timing is controlled electronically via the CDI unit which either works or doesn't work with no inbetweens in my experience. My view is to check the compression on both cylinders. If either reads below 90 psi you may have a problem with the head gasket, valve seating, or piston rings. See my post on the Suzuki DF15, as it essentially the same engine. On mine the head gasket has failed and as part of this the corrosion in the combustion chamber also seized the lower piston rings in place with salt deposits causing the problem.           ........... also the telltale feeds directly off the water coming from the impeller in the lower unit. The telltale pick up is from the oil pan / powerhead face where the main water gallery runs up into the power head from the impeller. This water gallery is adjacent to the exhaust outlet feeding from the cylinders to the lower unit exhaust outlet. The temperature of the telltale should not really be that warm as it doesn't come from the engine water jackets. Maybe the close proximity to the exhaust outlet is causing some heat transfer but I didn't notice that on my engine. My only other thought is that your thermostat is seized shut and the engine is seriously overheating leading to excessive heat around the telltale pick up.
