    All,

    I have heard several versions of the "how" but I am seeking to understand truth on how the new gauges calculate fuel burned. Is the total fuel burn data fed directly from the engine or is it a combination of data points including your fuel level sender? Seems the data from the engine would be enough.. Please confirm for me.

    It is all from the engine. I still have my old analog gauge but it not even connected to the new Suzuki system. If you reset the new Suzuki gauge at fill up, it is a lot more accurate as to how much fuel has been burned = you know how much you have left in the tank.

      Fuel level sender has nothing at all to do with it. Zilch.

      The engine sends fuel flow data to the network and the interface software calculates fuel used from that data. When the interface is initially configured you input the fuel tank capacily. Every time you either refill the tank or add any quantity of fuel, you have to input that info via the gauge, and the system then adjusts itself accordingly.

      The new gauges are really just a display for information sourced from the network, and they also act as the "keyboard" that you use to update info on the network (eg amount of fuel added as just noted). They dont do much apart from that. Just display info.

        As the previous two posts point out, the fuel used is calculated by the ECU and the information sent to your gauge. It is done in much the same manner as the MPG displays in some modern autos. Under a given regulated fuel pressure, each injector has a duty cycle that is controlled by the ECU. This duty cycle length is determined by inputs from throttle position, engine temperature, engine RPM, manifold pressure, and various other parameters. But the bottom line is that under a constant fuel pressure, a certain volume of fuel will be injected, and the ECU knows this volume by the length of time that it keeps each injector open. Calculation and calibration of this data is accomplished by the engine interface prior to being sent to the gauge to have a readout presented.
