  • Suzuki new C10 Multi Function Gauge interface cable

I have two 2013 DF175 motors on my cat. I will be changing out my problematic sims round 4 inch Multi-Function Gauges to the new C-10 square multi color gauge kit. I have a NMEA 2000 backbone up and running with 2 Garmin monitors and a Garmin autopilot all working well on NMEA 2000.
What interface cable version will I need?
The Serial numbers of my engines are 410542 and 310114
Will I also require a C-10 update cable?
I live in Mexico so I do not have the luxury of having parts close by, all parts must come from the USA.

    Hi Hotspot and welcome!

You should be able to use your existing interface cables with the new C-10 displays. Just check my note further below re software version.

So if that is all OK, you wont need the full "kit", just the C10's. This will save quite a bit of money for you.

Just unplug the old SMIS displays from the network, remove them from the dash, install the C10's and then connect the C10's to the T pieces that the SMIS displays were plugged into. Done.

All that is then needed is to set each C10 up to show the engine data that you want. I expect you would have set up the SMIS displays so one shows data from the port angine and one shows data from the starboard - well, you just set up the C10's much the same way to show what info you want, where you want it.

The only issue might be software versions of the C10's vis a vis the interfaces and your engine's model year.

Do you know what software version your interface cables are running now? You may be able to see the tag on the cables themselves, or, better still, go into the Garmin screens, menu, network devices, open one of the Suzuki devices and see if it shows you a software version - should say something like "software: V 3.5.0 RRD" you will need the engine keys turned on to see the Suzuki devices in the device list.

Being 2013 motors, it should be V3.5.0 to work properly. That being the case, if you get new C10's they should come with the latest software and that is supposed to work fine with V 3.5.0.

So if that is all the case, it should all be a deadset simple swap - remove old SMIS displays, install new C10's, connect them to the network T's, set them up to your preferences, done!

Let us know if ypu have more questions.

      Hi Moonlighter, Thanks for helping.
I received my C-10 gauges today and installed all 3 gauges. They look great.
After installing the 3 gauges I booted everything up on NMEA 2000 and the system recognized everything except the STB engine. Port engine works great. Both motors will start with engine hours showing on both motors. I looked at the software and both interface cables are V 3.5.0. I bought the interface cable new with the C-10 gauge from International marine.
I even tried completely removing the port engine interface cable from the NMEA system and also tried switching interface cable from port to STB.
No mater what I do it only recognizes the port side engine. I even changed out all the Tee pieces to see if it would make a difference.
With the engines off but keys on, I put the Port throttle into gear and a message comes up saying it’s in gear but not when I do it to the STB side. It’s not noticing the STB side.
When resetting all gauges it never recognizes the STB engine. I always have to manually put the STB engine in as engine number 2. Also tried auto select in the network with no success.
I think I configure everything correctly on initial start up as its self explanatory. I even did a restore default a few times and started from scratch.
Do you think it might be the engine serial numbers? I looked at the serial number directly on the engine not the bill of sale and here are the serial numbers. Port side engine 17502Z-310114 2012 Suzuki motor. STB side 17502F - 410542 2013 motor.
Your help is much appreciated as here in southern Mexico we have no Suzuki dealers.

I think You still need to configure the system properly - i havent seen a C10 manual but this should be set out in there. The symptoms you describe are typically because of a failure to complete the initial setup properly.

Essentially, the first thing to do is you have to turn both keys on, and on one of the C10's, go into the network menu and complete the "boat setup" - set it up as 2 engines/2 tanks if that is what you have. And it should then prompt you to enter the tank capacities of each tank and possibly the total capacity as well.

Then name each interface in the device list as either port or starboard. This will identify them for future reference.

Did you do that, in that order?

Only when this is done will the network then know what it is dealing with.

Once you've done the config process, you then need to set each C10 up to display the data from whichever engine you want on that gauge.

So you would, for example, go into the left side C10 and set each item on the screen to show data from the port engine. The manual tells you how, its pretty simple. Then do the same for the other gauge except set it to show data from the starboard engine. This all takes a while because you have quite a number of dials and gauges on the different C10 pages to do, but once its all done, it is set and forget.

You must learn to understand that these displays are not attached to one engine or the other - they are attached to the network and they have to be told what to do, what info to display, and first of all, what the engine and tank arrangement is on the boat so the network knows what its dealing with. So its nothing to do with the cables or which T piece anything is connected to: once something is connectd to a T piece, its data goes onto the network and/or it can get any data feom the network - it just needs to know what ypu want and ge tokd where to get it.

Hope that explaination helps. Let me know how you go.

          Hi Moonlighter,
Thanks for your assistance, you steered me in the right direction. It’s great to have people like you taking time out of your day to assist other boating/fishing enthusiast. Thanks again..
The manual states to configure the engine location correctly when you have more than 1 motor…. But they do not write or show you how to do it in the manual.
After spending most of the day trying to configure the 3 gauges I removed the 3rd gauge from the NMEA 2000 and managed to configure 2 gauges to my 2 motors to work, I think properly. Taking the boat for a good run tomorrow and see how the gauges work.
Can I now just plug the 3rd gauge into the NMEA 2000 without configuring the gauge?
I also have 2 Suzuki EP65R fuel sensors that I have not connected to the NMEA system. From what I read the engines’ computer is more accurate on fuel used than the sensors, do you agree?

Ok, good that you got it sorted!!

Now, you only have to do the boat setup once - ie setting the number of engines and tanks. That info is retained in the network itself, even if you remove all the C10's it will still be there. Thats the bit we call "configuring the network".

The displays themselves then are "set up" to show whatever info you choose from the network.

So you can simply add the 3rd gauge, i am not sure what data it will default to, so again, it is probably going to be a case of setting the data sources for each dial etc as you want them.

Most people with 3 displays use the left one for port engine data, the right one for starboard engine, and the centre one - well, you should be able to set it up to show combined fuel used and the like. But really, its up to you to decide what you want the default screens to show - and as you know from the manual, you can quite easily set up custom pages to show whatever combo of data you want.

            Good luck and tight lines!

Will let you know how I make out with the 3rd gauge and fuel system after I take the boat out for a run today, Thanks again for your guiding hand.
