It has built in software that uses the information sent to the computer via sensors, mainly map sensor for engine load, rpm, Engine temp, iat, and closed throttle switch ect. If your engine won't advance when in
increasing the rpm it will be in fail safe.
It knows when the throttle is closed from the information from the closed throttle switch. If the closed throttle switch failed on, it will log a code when the rpm goes over 2500rpm indicating a switch failure.
