  • 2015 Suzuki DF40A Corrosion

    Hi all,

Looking for some advice on my 2015 DF40A Tiller steer.

I'm not an experienced mechanic but I usually do my own basic servicing as I live in remote Australia. Because it's difficult get to an authorised Suzuki dealer for servicing I had to start self servicing after it reached 3 years old, so i'm guessing I now have no warranty. I have owned the engine since new.

I would also like to add that I'm fastidious when flushing my engine & never store it after use without a proper flush. The past year I started using "Salt away" additive to my flushes. The engine is used only in Saltwater.

    The problem:
Recently I noticed the tell tale on the engine wasn't as strong as it normally is. It never got hot or overheated so I decided to buy a water pump repair kit impeller/gaskets/sleeve/seal/plate & do it anyway (the last time it was done was 8 months/80 hours ago by a suzuki mechanic). I also checked the external & internal anodes and they are fine.

When I removed the steel plate under the impeller I noticed some corrosion (photo attached). I also noticed a fair bit of water coming out the 2 small holes at the front of the motor, I'm unsure if this is normal or not as it's not something I took notice of until recently but I attached a photo of that as well in case it helps (photo attached).

    My questions are:

    1. Is corrosion in that area the cause of the weaker tell tale? (It's only 30% or so weaker but it doesn't fire out like it used to).

    2. Should I leave it the way it is for now seeing the engine runs fine and doesn't get too hot or is this something that needs fixing asap?

I'm unsure if this is something I shouldn't worry about unless overheating occurs/tell tale becomes weaker or if I should try to get it repaired immediately.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
