Timing is set by the ECM, pulse coils, gear counting coil and TPS. You can check timing for each cylinder by the marks on the flywheel, but no way to adjust on my motors.
On your motor they used a timing base with sensor assy, and I do not know if that assy is fixed position, or if adjustable? The service manual should answer these questions.
You can adjust the idle stop screw at the carbs for idle, and adjust the idle air-mixture setting screw, but factory setting on air-mixture screw (per manual), for each carb, runs just right (not too lean, not too rich).
Not sure if this answers your questions, and your 1987 motor is seven + years older than mine ('94 & '99). I'm not sure how they timed them in '87? Were they using points and dwell adjustments then?
