Engine only starts when throttle is extended in neutral position. When brought back to normal neutral to put into gear engine stops. Seems to be some kind of kill switch problem? What do I check?

If I understand the scenario, you can get it to start and run by disengaging the shift mechanism by pushing the large button in the center of the throttle/shift lever, and advancing the throttle. Then when returning to idle RPM position (neutral shift position) the engine dies. There is no kill switch associated with this lever.
I would suspect either the throttle position sensor, or the IAC.Mike
