  • 1995 DT40TC -- What Switch in Control Box Keeps Both Starter and Tilt Inoperative?

I'm trying to figure out a nest of problems in my electrical system. On a sporadic basis, neither the motor will start nor will the tilt work. (Battery is fiine.) Is there a switch (kill, neutral start, etc.) in the control box that -- if not working correctly -- will prevent both these items from not working? Thank you.

Does the motor turn over and not start or will it not turn over when you turn the key? If the latter is the case and your tilt will not work, consider this to be a battery power problem as it is the common link between these two parts. Most often you will find ground wires not making good contact, but it also could be the positive wires - so, don't just look at them or jiggle them, take the connections off, clean them and tighten them good and tight. Do this at the battery and your ignition switch. Both your starter motor and your trim motor pull a lot of power so good connections are necessary.

If this does not fix the problem, take the battery to have it checked - just because it shows 12v does not mean it is good enough to handle the power needed.

Let us know what you find.

There is not a switch that prevents starter from turning over and tilt from working. Check fuses and wiring connections going to starter solenoid from battery.
Does your tilt work at motor?
You may have a couple of problems, both may be related to bad grounds, or other wire connections.

      Good luck.

Problem Solved; Thanks Immensely for Your Guidance

Both of the folks who gave me guidance immediately honed in on the battery. I determined that even though the battery NOMINALLY had enough power, in reality it did not. I bought an Exide Edge AGM battery to replace the Walmart Everstart standard marine battery; now everything functions as it should. Thank you for your willingness to give of your time and knowledge to less knowledgable folks like me!
