  • Surging

Ihave a 115 less than 20 hrs. I was on a NO Wake lake putting along at 1000 rpm and the engine started running rough. I put in nuetral and gave it some throttle. It was smooth up to 2500 rpm. When I hit 3000rpm it started surging coming back to 2500 then back up and down back up and down. Is this a rev limit out of gear? Or a different problem. Any Ideas? Thanks

Gee, not much to go on there.... It could be many things.

And yes, there is a neutral rev limiter that stops it revving past about 2500 when its in neutral. It will do exactly what you experienced.

First choice re the running rough issue - water in fuel. If you run a water separating filter change it out, and dump contents into a glass jar and see what you find.

If you are not running a good water separating filter, why not?? They are essential with any outboard, especially EFI motors. Clogged injectors will cost you a lot more to fix than a good Racor style filter in the fuel line.

Doesnt the engine have one on it? There is a glass bowl with wires coming off the bottom. I thought that was it. If not do you have a link as to which one to buy. Thanks Moon

I should put this between the bulb and engine?

Actually, it makes no difference. However, I put mine between the tank and the filter because it is easier to pull fuel from the tank to fill the filter. But here's an installation trick - fill the filter as much as you can BEFORE you screw it on the mount, then fill it the rest of the way using the bulb. On one one of my boats I can fill it completely, but the filter mount on the other boat is not so easy to reach and I can only fill the new filter about half way - so keep this in mind when you select a place to mount the filter. Easier to reach also aids in unscrewing the filter when you want to change it.

He is saying that most people put it between the tank and the bulb. But it dowsnt really matter that much.

So most people set it up like this, is what is being said:

Fuel tank, Racor filter, bulb, engine.

Change the filter element every 100 hrs or annually.
