  • 2003 df140 temp light

I sold the boat today after a nice 10 minute test ride with the buyer. He came back an hour later with the cash, and drove the boat away. I got a text from him about a half hour later that the temp light came on, so he shut it down immediately. I called him immediately, and he advised me after running at 5000rpms for the half hour, the light and buzzer came on while he was coming off of plane for no wake zone. While talking to him, he had already restarted and was idling in with no lights or buzzers. He had one more area to get on plane before his destination so he would call me back to let me know what happened. He called back and said after 2 minutes on plane, the temp light came back on and he would like his money back. I told him of course, and to start heading back to my place. I met him out there on my jetski because I didn't want anything bad to happen, and he was idling back. Over an hour later we arrived at my house without any lights. After letting it sit for an hour, I took it out myself and drove it for about 20 minutes at full throttle and didn't have any lights or buzzers. There was A LOT of seaweed today and mild chop. If it was truly overheating, wouldn't it have overheated at 20 minutes wot? Maybe a little seaweed made it past the intake? Maybe exhaust sensor? Any ideas?

    Just tried again

I just went the same route the buyer took, drove at 4200 rpms, and sure enough in almost the same spot (30 minute ride), the temp and limit light came on. I saw a little smoke, and turned off the motor. Took off the hood and the intake manifold was very hot, so the boat is definitely overheating. I sat for about a half hour to let it cool, then headed home at 3200 rpm. The pee stream looks strong, throws it about 6 feet. Almost home, it did it again, so it seems like a time thing. And it was hard to tell, but the stream seemed much weaker at the time the light came on. Started it right back up to idle in and the stream is 6ft again. The water pump isn't that old, but maybe? Maybe thermostat, or something much worst? The boat sounds and runs great until then, with good compression.

      just replaced thermostat

I replaced the thermostat, and it didn't look terrible. I flushed the motor out from the housing area, but nothing bad came out. Took the top zinc out of the rectifier, and it was plugged up behind it. I cleaned it up and put it back together. I then started the engine, and would swear the pee stream was much stronger. I took the boat for a ride, and after about 5 minutes at wot, (I continued looking back at the stream and it was very strong) I pulled back and went to idle. The pee stream looked pathetic. I reved the engine a little to make the stream stronger so I didn't overheat, then turned around and went home. With rpms, the stream looked 10ft long, but slow down to idle, 2 ft. Raise rpm just a little and it was back to 6 ft and strong.
