  • 2007 DF150 - Driveshaft Bushing Squeal?

I've been running this motor for about a year now and it has always had a RPM driven squeal most noticable at low RPMs (probably because pitch increases and the engine noise overpowers it at higher rpms). Anyway, I removed and replaced the driveshaft bushing and clip, greased it with Mercury Special Grease 101 and the noise remains. I have less than 10 hrs with the new bushing and clip.

It drives me nuts. Any help on the topic is appreciated as I've read all I can on THT with no obvious solution.

    Thanks!

One of my DF175's also had a high pitched squeal/ringing at idle. You need to lubricate the ceramic driveshaft bushing next time you drop the lower unit. I was told to apply marine grease by my dealer and it did stop the noise.

Kdubinwa, thanks for the reply. But, as I mentioned in my post, I’ve already replaced and greased that bushing.

If I need to use something other than 2-4-c, please advise. Or, if there is a more specific greasing procedure... I’d love to know. Thanks!

Check out the thread below. It may be similar to the issue you are having. My DF20 has a high pitched noise at the low to mid RPMs. I am hoping that a new prop will fix the issue, similar to the author of the thread.

Do you have a picture of this bushing you are talking about?

That (#7) is the bushing I greased using Suzuki brand water resistant marine grease. I did not remove the bushing, I only reached up and recoated all the surfaces. Sorry that doesn't do the trick for you. I only had one motor that would sing/squeal a high pitched sound at idle and my dealer suggest lubricating the ceramic driveline bushing. I had to drop the lower unit for a 200 hr service so I lubed the bushing on both outboards. Put the muffs on It was night and day difference. That was 200 hrs ago and the squeal/ringing has not returned.

I was using 2-4-c but I recent purchased the Suzuki brand water resistant grease... hopefully that does the trick.
