  • It wants to start

    Hello all,

I have a 2011 DF140. I got a load of bad gas at the local station, lost rpm to about 2800 then it died and had to use trolling motor to get back to ramp. It was a strange orange color. I have since drained and refilled tank, replaced water separator, high and low pressure fuel filters and also had the injectors cleaned and changed spark plugs(carbon covering electrodes) but she won't start. It tries to run, it might fire off for a second then nothing. I did notice a code 32 beeping, map sensor passage, so I pulled sensor and checked air passage for blockage but no problem found there. I checked the low pressure pick up pump and it's working and I can hear my electric pump priming in the pressure tank. I have good spark and compression so it would seem to be a fuel delivery problem. Any ideas where to go from here?

    Thanks,

    Spencer

First step with any fuel issue...run off a portable gas tank filled with clean fuel from a mainland gas station...then see what happens

were you able to drain all the fuel lines completely?
if you didn't you may have to start by making sure everything got drained
from the fuel bulb to the high pressure fuel reserve to the fuel rail that supplies the injectors.
after hooking up a clean fuel tank.. use the fuel bulb to pump all the old fuel clear to the high pressure system out.. .
      then try it again
if you have too.. try spraying some starter fluid in the air intake to get it fire a couple of times..
check the plugs also.. make sure they are not fouled ..

I will try another fuel source. I changed the spark plugs. I can't say for sure I got all the bad fuel out of system. I will purge all the lines, primer ball to the vst drain and let you know how it goes. I really appreciate your inputs!

You may have another inline screen filter inside the bottom hose off the vst that supplies fuel to the high pressure pump (clean screen and reconnect). You can also disconnect the hose going back to the vst from the fuel rail, clamp it inside a glass jar, pump bulb and turn key to first position (not start) for a few seconds. If fuel comes out clean reconnect line. Then with water on impeller try to start.

          Good luck.

Were the plugs wet when you removed them after trying to start it, If they were, lift the warm up leaver to open the throttle a small amount to let more air in, the iac might not be bypassing enough air.

Used new fuel source and cleaned and re-gapped new plugs, ran a compression test just to be sure 165-180lbs. I got it started for about a minute, tyried to throttle up a bit and it died and back to no start. The original plugs I pulled were carbon black and dry. I will check bottom line at vst to see if I have a restriction there. Thanks for the input.

Checked hose at bottom of vst. It seems to go back to the bottom of fuel rail. Isn't that a return line? There was no filter or restriction there. I guess it's time to pull intake/vst assembly and inspect further. I'll let you know what I find.

Saw this somewhere and copied it to file. It might help.

I have cleaned everything, new fuel supply, new filters and plugs. It will start now {sometimes I must crack the throttle} but won't idle well. the code 32 is now gone but still not right. Any more suggestions?

your original comment fuel: strange orange color ?? diesel comes to mind..

I believe the IAC valve should be looked at.. I don't have my book here but think that should be removed cleaned and reset

the other thing.. get some starter fluid and use that to assist in getting it running
you evidently still have some "stuff" that needs to be worked out of the fuel system from the sounds of it.. .

the hose that goes to the fuel rail should be the line that feeds the fuel rail
there is another hose directly off the bottom of the VST that is the drain hose
I think, could be wrong, that this hose sometimes goes to the crank case.. in the case that the float valve hangs up .. can put fuel into the oil .. the syndrome some folks have termed -the engine is 'making oil'

But if you can get it started and keep trying and work at it.. you will burn the rest of the bad fuel out of the system ..

It is possible that what ever you put in your tank has got through your filters and has blocked the small filter baskets that sit inside your injectors. Do this simple test, make sure you have access to your throttle plate, get a portable butane torch, start the engine even if you have to use a bit of throttle while it is running just open the valve a small amount and if it is running lean the revs will instantly increase. If on the other hand it runs worse it is running to rich, this will instantly tell you what direction you have to follow.
