  • Photos of 1982 DT9.9 Motor - Where is the water outlet/tell-tale?

    Hi all,

Can somebody please tell me where the water outlet/tell-tale is on this 1982 Suzuki DT9.9 outboard motor (see photos below)?

    Serial no. 09910-13178

    Thanks,
    Chris

After looking at the parts pages for your motor, it appears, there is no listing for a tell-tale discharge tube, or thermostat housing/ thermostat parts for this motor?

It may be an incomplete parts listing, or could be they didn't have the tell-tale lines back then? If that is the case with your motor, then the exhaust hole (middle of leg in back [photos #4 & #5 from top]) shown in pics, would be where water sprays out with exhaust at lower speeds, and increases at higher rpms.

If, you have water coming out around the lower block area when running (no pics of these areas, or back of block), then there should be a tube that connects and protrudes through the lower cover hole also seen in pic #4.

Good luck, post back when able to let us know what you find out.

      Thanks Solarman.

Are there older motors that discharged water below the water line? Sounds odd, how would one tell if your cooling system is flushing properly if you can't see the discharge/tell-tale.

I've had no luck getting the manual online without buying the hard copy from US (I'm in Australia) which would take a week to get here (am a little pressed for time). Browns Point doesn't stock any more.

I've found these videos that look the same as my motor and you can see on some it comes out on the underside of the lower cover at the top, and on some it comes out of that hole at the middle of the back of the leg.

      Top: https://youtu.be/P34LYejH4FY?t=680

      Middle: https://youtu.be/TIrlEDY817o?t=36

      Top: https://youtu.be/tBxtkBV5GSQ?t=20

      Middle: https://youtu.be/ZpQ2IpnDUvA?t=179

I will post some daytime photos later of the block and such and see what else I find today.

I might try using compressor air in the water inlet and see if I can feel it come out, that might tell me if it's blocked or if it's impellor (assuming no thermostat).

Interestingly also page 15 of parts manual shows a 'TUBE, sub water' as #28. Not sure what that is?

        https://www.brownspoint.com/store/pc...T16(80-82).pdf

Also page E-9 (pg 37), says at top right: 'GEAR CASE 2 (BEHIND WATER EXHAUST)'. Is that referring to where the water 'exhausts' out?

The sub-water tube was installed as a back up water supply for the water pump (usually located just above the prop), especially during idle & reverse motion. In reverse, water going to vents/angled for forward motion/water pump source, did not supply enough water, so the sub-water pick-up location just above the prop was added to keep the water pump cooling the motor during those problem times.

It has nothing to do with the tell-tale stream.

Have you run the motor? If yes, is there any water running into the lower cover. I'm guessing no. Which says your only tell-tale is back of mid-section, that exhaust hole, should spray water with the exhaust at all times. Different amounts of water with respect to thermostat opening, and temp of motor.

          Good luck.

You're on the money Solarman. I came to report that the tell-tale/exhaust hole is at the back of the leg (mid way up, shown in photo 5 above) for my motor variation. When we ran it only exhaust came out but I guess we didn't run it long enough previously because this time water started coming out of that hole (to our surprise/relief). Whether that is because of the thermostat or a blockage I'm not sure. When I ran it about 20min later no water came out for about 30s-1min and then it did. Does seem thermostat related.

It's interesting because some variations have the tell-tale higher up and some have it where I have it (you'll see the two different outlets if you search YouTube for 'Suzuki 9.9' or DT16)

Anyway am happy with the result. Hopefully this helps someone else in the future.

            Thanks again Solarman, happy boating!
