  • DF 4 water pump question

I dont know if this is where I should be or not, but here goes. Before the last season 2015 I had the water pump rebuilt, which appears to be mostly just a new impeller. Anyway, this year in April 2016 I put the motor back on, had it in my garage thru the winter. It fired right up, but the stream of water shooting out is intermittent. This happens at any rpm. Seems like it should be solid stream at least at higher rpm. It has been in the past.
Cant find a filter. Am I missing something here, or is there a possible clog, or do I just need to put in a new impeller. Any ideas will be valued, as I am on a small budget.

Must be running on muffs and it is not getting enough water
It sounds to me that the pump is sucking some air in

Try using a barrel or take to a river/lake and see what it will do

      Suzuki Water pump

      Hi,
Art, thank you for the reply. Not sure what it means to 'run on muffs'.
If sucking air, where would that take place? The motor is in the water at the lake.

Muffs--- that is an expression where you run the engine off a garden hose ..
if you are in the lake.. then that will not apply to your situation

what you might look at.. is did you get the impeller in correctly?
if you had the water pump rebuilt.. it should have had a new impeller
there is no filter as such.. there is a screen on the lower unit where the water intake is

did you do the water pump rebuild or someone else?
and I take it this is the first time you have actually run the engine since that was done?

          Suzuki Water pump

          Hi Art,
The rebuild was done here at a shop in Spokane and ran great all last season. Just this spring when I put it in it runs a good stream then shoots out droplets for a few seconds (like it is loosing suction) and then a stream again. I am concerned about overheating.
Took a small wire, nothing seems to be in the outlet. Not sure where the inlet is, but can check for clog.

I would have them replace the water pump again, except this time, use a full water pump kit including the housing - heard of a number of cases where the stainless housing didnt mate perfectly to the impeller causing symptoms such as youve described.
