  • DF140 Power Trim

Hey guys I know the power trim issue comes up a lot but still not cannot solve it. This is for a 2003 model. It will not trim up but the down will work, sometimes erratically however. So far I have replaced the "up" relay and just replaced the entire PTT motor and still does not trim up. When engaging both the switch on the engine and throttle, both relays (up and down) click and getting voltage coming out of both when engaged. I have hooked up a couple of different batteries to ensure it wasn't because of that. Please help with where to go from here!

I know you mentioned you did replace one relay, but when I had this issue it was advised to me to replace both. Not sure how exactly that would relate, but just a thought. You could also now try swapping the two that you have so the new relay is in the other position, see if you have the same symptoms or if it switches to down not working.

I had experienced problems with my trim a couple of years ago on my DF175
would trim up and not down
try disconnecting the trim switch at the engine and see if the one on the throttle control will work correctly.
My problem turned out to be the engine trim switch.. salt water had penetrated inside and partially shorting out the switch
I disassembled this switch and found that the salt water was shorting out the circuit
cleaned it up and reassembled switch and it then worked the way it was supposed to until I was able to purchase a replacement
      no more problems since
      Art..

When you press the trim switch on the motor or the throttle, battery voltage will flow down to the relay, energise the relay coil and the the heavy current contacts will close. From there battery voltage will flow into the motor through the brushes and armature, out of the motor to ground, THROUGH THE OTHER RELAY, and vise verser, this is where you are getting confused. It sounds like you have no ground on the down relay, if you press the up button and the relay energises you should have no voltage on the main green wire, if you have it is not going to ground.

I have twin DF 140 and one engine raise to the full up position when fishing in shipping channel. Found the trim switch was contaminated with salt water.

This was the exact problem. I didn't realize both relays act as ground for each other depending on trim up or down. The down relay wasn't grounding for the trim up and needed to be replaced instead of the up relay I first changed. Thanks so much for the help.
