Can anyone tell me how my 1986 Suzuki 20 HP electric start outboard recharges the battery? Does it use a stator or small alternator? Can't seem to figure this out. Thanks!

It has a stator/magneto, located under the flywheel (flywheel has magnets). This produces a/c voltage. This voltage then goes to the regulator-rectifier that has diodes converting voltage to d/c. The regulator part is used to adjust the amount of voltage needed/required to charge the battery. This alternator is used to operate the motor and re-charge the battery.
This magneto operates like an alternator, but the magneto has stationary windings - the magnets revolve around. Where most auto alternators have stationary magnets - the windings are on the armature that rotates.
This is about as basic as it can be explained.
Good luck.
