  • New DF140 Owner with a couple questions

Just purchased a used 2014 Bullsbay with a 2014 Suzuki DF140a motor. Great to see a forum like this out there for support and already finding some good info. I had a couple questions and wanted to see if anyone had any input.

First, I wanted to see if anyone could tell me if I have the water hose style hookup anywhere. I am not seeing the port that you hook the little attachment to so I am thinking I do not have that option.

Second, it is not peeing, but for the life of me I can not figure out which hole would be the pee hole as the only one I am seeing in the back shoots straight out...... I attached some photos of the unit.

Thanks for any input, it is greatly appreciated.

The hose hookup is in your second photo, on the port side of the engine. You see a smooth rubber plug about 1" diameter, and below that is a removable threaded black plastic plug which has standard male hose threads. When you grab that tab and unscrew the plug, you should be able to thread a male hose fitting into the engine. You must have the plug in place to run the engine in the water, and you can remove it to flush the engine out of the water.

I believe your pee hole is on the opposite (starboard) side of the engine, and I think I see it in the third photo near the rear of the housing. On my DF25A, the pee hole is pointing straight down, and is kind of hidden up in that small tubular opening.

Don't do what I did: When I first mounted my engine to the boat, I put it in a tub of water that was filled slightly above to the level of the ventilation plate - completely covering the water intake. I started the engine for the first time and it wouldn't pee as it idled. I stopped the motor and filled my tub a couple more inches - to the top, but still no pee. I thought perhaps it wouldn't start to pee until the thermostat opened, so I let it idle for about 30-60 secs, which is a big no-no, because running dry can trash the rubber impeller in the engine (though I haven't seen any problems with mine in the first year). I regret that little experiment, with fingers crossed...

Finally I installed the hose in addition to running in my tub, and the motor started to pee. Lesson for me is that it seems that the water level must be at least as high as the pump impeller in order to "prime" the impeller. Or alternatively I believe (but am not sure) that you can prime the impeller with the hose. But I don't believe the hose fitting is intended to provide cooling water for running the engine. It's really intended to flush salt water from the engine. If you want to run the engine, the water intake should be submerged e.g. in a tub or trash can, or you should put hose muffs over the water intakes below the ventilation plate.

2014DF25ARS - Thank you for the insight and lesson you learned. I am not seeing what you are seeing in the third photo, but I am going to look much closer when I get home, as well as hook the hose up and see if flushing it that way gets it to pee. Of course I will not run the motor unless I have the muffs hooked up.

I have taken it out twice now, and both times flushed with the muffs, and both times everything has operated perfectly from what I can tell.

      Thanks again.

The pee hole is in the first picture, it is the right hand of the two outlets in the centre of the picture. You can turn the nossle to direct the pee up , down or sideways.

          Df 140

Screw a long male fitting once you have removed the plug on the port side, connect a garden hose, and she'll pee

Ok finally had some time to check the motor out, thanks for all the input!

See the pee hole, good deal.

This plastic screw cap seems like it does not want to go anywhere, I can turn a little but feels like it is not wanting to go past that. Is this thing supposed to be hard to get off or possible just a little gummed up? I just don't want to force it and mess something up rendering the motor useless till repaired.

I guess I will apply a little more force and see if I can not get it to twist off. Hopefully not stripping/breaking something in the process.

So I was able to get the plug out without ripping the plastic apart, almost happened, previous owner must not have used it ever as it was a little gummed up with Salt.

Still no pee when using the hose. Also tried putting some weedwhacker string up the hole, goes in some then gets stuck on something, tad bit of water on the end, but thinking there is sand in there as it felt a little grimy.

Waiting on the mechanic to get back to me so I can bring it in for a good 100 mile service once over.

Glad you got it off, but the worst case is you break the plastic plug and it's about a $4 part. I just had to absolutely destroy mine to get it out due to salt buildup. The new one will go in with a liberal coating of waterproof grease in the threads. And get removed and reinstalled periodically even though I never use that flush port (I always flush with the motor running and using muffs).

As far as the motor not peeing - use a pair of pliers or a small flathead screwdriver and pop off the plastic end cap on the end of the "pee outlet." You probably have some buildup in there or a chunk of grit blocking the outlet. Remove the end cap, ensure the hole in it is clear, and inspect inside of the outlet for crud. Seems to happen on mine about once a year.

My order would be popping pee hole off and cleaning. Then remove housing and making sure thermostat isn't gummed up and stuck. Then it would be water pressure poppett valve. Also I would run motor in tub and not on muffs during this process. Good luck

So I popped off the pee cap and did see a little build up of sand in there, nothing really blocking the hole, rinsed it out and hooked the hose up to the flush outlet, still no pee. Does not seem like I can get any further up the metal port the cap sits in to clean it out...... Am I safe to assume this is correct?

I get kind of lost as you say your next steps would be checking the thermostat and water pressure poppett valve. I will see if I can locate some documentation on the motor for visual direction regarding that.

I am trying to get it into a trusted Suzuki tech but he is extremely busy so it keeps getting pushed off each week. Running the boat this past weekend everything was working great other than no pee...... I do have a temperature alert light on the tach, but have been told if that starts going off the motor is pretty much about to blow...... Not sure how accurate that statement is.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

The thermostat is on top of the head, next to the oil fill cap. Just follow the big rubber hose up the back of the motor and it leads straight to it. Remove three bolts to access the thermostat. Sounds like it may be stuck closed. They're cheap enough to replace but you could also soak it in white vinegar to dissolve any salt buildup which could free it up again if that's the case.

                          Where are you located?

I will give this a try and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the input, I am in the Tampa area of FL.

I have same boat and motor. Couple questions: when you power trim

YOur motor all the way does the motor stop when you can not trim anylonger or does it still run
Mine shuts off and the motor is not flush to the boat Off about 3/4 of inch
