  • Suzuki 2.5 HP Cuts out in waves.

Newer 2.5 HP OB, chokes and nearly stalls and sometimes does stall when underway. I have it mounted on my kayak and it sits low so the occasional wave will hit the bottom of the engine housing. The engine will sputter and stutter, and most of the time it returns to normal power, occasionally it is a big enough splash that it stalls. I can restart on 1st or second pull and it starts up. Just wondering why it acts this way. Water into air intake?, Electronics getting wet? Working on a fix to keep the water/waves away from the base of the housing. Would like to know the cause however so I can focus on the correct fix.

Mine is a Suzuki, but you can see how I mount it here.

Any thoughts. My buddy has the same set up with the same motor and it happens to both motors in same sea conditions.

I did speak with Suzuki mechanic who thought I should be able to nearly dunk the engine in water before it would stall out. The air intake and spark plug are on the top of the motor. The electronics he thought would not be hurt by a short splash. His thought it was the back pressure on the exhaust as the engine became lower in the water might cause the engine to act this way. I can test by lowering into a tank of water and see if I can reproduce this. It happens on two of the same motors in the same conditions.

Still would like more input on the topic.
