  • Suzuki DF 175 Trim and tilt up issues

    Hi all

I found you guys trying aimlessly to google why my trim is playing up on my 175hp Suzuki outboard and thought I would try my luck.

After sitting in the shed for a couple of weeks with power isolator so turned off I went to take the boat out and the trim switched both on the outboard and on the throttle stick would not lift the motor ... I persisted and they would both trim the motor down but not up. After pressing the switch maybe 20 times or so eventually it kicked in and all worked fine like nothing had happened. When I put the boat away I thought I would test it a couple of days later and he same thing happened...once working I tried to isolate the power and then turn it back on and it didn't seem to matter it still worked good as new...it seemed it just doesn't like sitting around too much. I called my mechanic and he suggested that the trim relay was likely on the way out so I got him to grab me one and installed it. Seemed better but hard to tell and after letting it sit for a few days the problem has returned. Does anyone have any advice as to what might be the cause and how I can fix it?

    Thanks in advance

    Matt

Sounds like connections are not making a good path when you push the up button.
Can check with 12v test light, or volt meter. If you know how to use? Connect negative lead to good ground, and slide positive lead into each connector, follow that wire till you find positive voltage, or where it stops, when pushing the up button.
If the relay is clicking every time you press up, then your problem is after the up-relay. If no clicking on up relay, then check the wiring before the relay.
It could be a dirty/bad plug connector. Once you find where voltage stops with tester, try a jumper wire to the next connection.

Good luck, don't short anything out if not familiar with wiring or electrical testing.

      Hi Solarman

Thanks for the advice I will have a look through the wiring and see how I go.

      Cheers

Matt , I am having the exact issue except mine is not lowering. It progressively got worse. I used a meter which I am well versed at and wound up replacing the round relay. Problem came back just as you described. Now it is stuck in the fully up position and I can't get the cover off because of it. Have you had any luck? My boat is 150 miles from my home so its not like I can step into my garage and work on it when I feel like it.

Airstar, your problem might be the same, and if stuck in the up position, there is a manual release screw on the side of your ptt motor unit that will allow it to go down. Use a large flat, or Phillips (depending on your model), it should be easy to turn, about 1 turn.
You shouldn't have a problem finding the screw, it says "release", or "manual release" right next to it.

Post back how is going. Good luck.

Also, if you have problems, open your own thread. Many more owners/individuals/mechanics will see it and help. If on someone else's thread, many won't see your problem. Thanks.

            Fixed

            Hi Solarman

Thanks very much for the advice the problem was a bad connection in a join long the wiring to the limit switch for the max up position that consequently meant it got worse.

All fixed now and at least I will know where to look in future now.

Airstar hopefully you have similar luck however given that yours is the opposite I doubt the limit switch cabling will be the problem as this is only in the circuit for the upward tilt motion. I would be looking at any and all connections throug from the relay outwards to the motor as the switches are unlikely given it is both switches. I found that trim release screw very handy when I was needing to raise the motor to bring it home from the ramp.

Thanks again for your help Solarman and good luck Airstar.
