Not sure what it is about the newer tanks that has you concerned- the way we have always put a fuel filter in is to cut the fuel line between the primer bulb and tank and put the filter in-line there. To change tanks simply means unplugging one tank at the tank end of the line and plugging another one in.
Perhaps you could post a photo showing what you are having difficulty with?
This is a used boat that I just bought and the previous owner had no filter other than the particulate filter in the tank and under the cowl. My new Suzuki came with a tank that's setup like his old one.
My previous boat had a built-in tank with a Yamaha filter. So I wondered if this isn't done by portable tank users. Personally I like the extra level of protection.
Wayne, its a great idea to add the RACOR style filter into the fuel line.
Ive just finished setting up a aluminium 14ft river boat, what we in Australia call a V-nose punt. We found a really good DF40A tiller steer that was only 2.5 years old, and when we had it installed, we did exactly that - added the RACOR filter with clear bowl between the engine and the primer bulb. There is nothing worse for fuel injectors than dirty fuel or water getting into them, and the small filters under the cowl are really only just enough to be the final filter.
So I would recommend to everyone that they add a separate water separating filter in the boats fuel line. It really should be regarded as an essential item.

A small price to pay for important protection of an essential system.
Hello Grant, I'm still running the 80 in.
Just running between 3500 - 3700. 35KPH.
Rivets havent popped out yet but I will have to strap myself in the chair for the 5000-6000 range.
Re the Raco filter, which one would you recommend?
Cheers, Glen.

Glen, this is the one you want, or equivalent in after market.
The second link below that looks almost identical is the version that my local Suzuki guy sells/installs, and the head unit is made of a composite material so never can rust. And its also less than half the price! Thats the one i have.
After reading this thread and others, I have ordered a racor filter for my boat. I've got a small motor (DF30A) but I paid big money for it, so what is $50 in the scheme of things.
A friend is replacing his wheel hubs on his Mercedes Vito van.
Retail price is $1000 each!!
Sometimes we pay too much for things because of the brand name.
Glen.
