I've recently acquired a DF40 tiller steer motor for our tinny (you Americans would call this a Jon Boat, I believe).
The tiller on my motor is also angled slightly to the port side of centre. So i understand where you are coming from.
My belief, however, is that this is a quite intentional part of the design and means that you must sit on the starboard side to drive the boat.
In my engines case, the tiller arm is one of the new fandangled ones that has a lcd tacho and warning lights on the side of it, facing the starboard side, so there is absolutely no doubt that you can only sit on the starboard side of the boat to drive.
With the tiller handle angled slightly away from you when you are sitting on the starboard side of the boat, and therefore you are holding the tiller with your left hand, when you want to turn the boat towards the port side (left), this design feature means that you have more room to pull the tiller arm towards you when you do a sharp turn, than you would if the tiller arm was straight.
Given this, i think you might just have to get used to it, drive lefthanded from the starboard side, and understand that the design actually works in your favour.
