2003 Suzuki DF114 4stroke-reverse not engaging properly

I have a 2003 Suzuki DF115 4stroke outboard on my 17ft keywest. The forward has always worked fine but when i shift into reverse sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. It will sound kind of rough going into reverse but usually it will eventually kick in reverse if i work it. Does anyone know what this could be? Is this something I could fix or do i need a mechanic?

When was last time the lower unit had the water pump replaced? It may be in need of adjustment since then?
